Build for growth… Simon Baker - Realestate.com.au

February 28th, 2008 · No Comments

At a BSI event, Simon Baker of Realestate.com.au let us in on some insights to how REA has structured for and achieved growth. I gleaned some key thoughts and wanted to share them.

1: Work out what is core

REA used to be into web development, operate as an ISP and a few other areas. These were non-core and sold off. The key from Simon was to work out what you do and focus on it. Maybe thats not new advice, but helpful.

2: Focus on what will break the market open for you

This might be achieved by focusing on either the supply-side or customer-side. Or possibly through service levels or pricing in compelling ways. Again, not new advice, but helpful.

3: Make good & quick decisions

REA has bought businesses after reaching an in principle agreement pretty quickly. They look like good buys now, but at the time, one would assume that they were more risky. However, applying the simplicity approach and attacking the market from a content perspective were key levers that we used to fuel the growth.

Overall I found Simon to be insightful and engaging and the BSI event a great networking opportunity.

So get out, meet some leaders, challenge their positions and appreciate their time.
